The Photographer Apprenticeship
The Photographer apprenticeship develops the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to plan, capture, edit, and deliver professional photographic work across a range of settings and sectors. It is suited to individuals working in-house, within creative agencies, or as part of wider marketing and communications teams.
What does the Photographer assessment involve?
The apprenticeship assessment for the Photographer standard is made up of two components.
Photographic project with presentation and questioning
After gateway, apprentices produce a photographic project interpreting a client brief, comprising 10 images across 2 to 4 genres with annotations totalling 1,500 words, submitted to progress minded by week 8 of the EPA period. This is followed by a 15-minute presentation and 45 minutes of questioning delivered via Microsoft Teams, covering the project scope, actions taken, and outcomes achieved.
Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
A structured 60-minute professional discussion delivered remotely via Microsoft Teams. The assessor uses planned and follow-up questions to explore how the apprentice applied photographic knowledge, skills, and behaviours in practice, underpinned by a portfolio of real work from the apprenticeship. At progress minded, we guide all parties through the process clearly and calmly, so there are no surprises at the end.

The Photographer standard covers the technical and creative skills needed to plan, capture, edit, and deliver professional photographic work. It is designed for individuals working in roles where photography is a primary professional output, across commercial, creative, and organisational settings.

All apprenticeship standards have an accompanying assessment plan. This document details the independent assessment that apprentices will undertake at the end of the apprenticeship. This will include details on the assessment methods and processes that will be followed.
