The Machine Learning Engineer apprenticeship develops the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to develop, evaluate, and maintain machine learning solutions across a range of technical and organisational contexts. It is suited to individuals working in data science, AI, or advanced analytics roles across public, private, and charitable sector organisations.
What does the Machine Learning Engineer assessment involve?
The apprenticeship assessment for the Machine Learning Engineer standard is made up of two components.
Project evaluation report with presentation and questioning
After gateway, apprentices produce a 5,000-word evaluation report on a machine learning solution they designed, built, or significantly contributed to, submitted to progress minded within 8 weeks of the EPA start date. This is followed by a 20-minute presentation and 30 minutes of questioning delivered via Microsoft Teams, covering the ML approach, challenges, and how the model mitigates harmful or biased outputs.
Professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
A structured 60-minute professional discussion delivered remotely via Microsoft Teams. The assessor uses planned and follow-up questions to explore how the apprentice applied machine learning engineering skills and behaviours in practice, underpinned by a portfolio of real work from the apprenticeship.
